Chapter 11

:icondecoleftup-plz::icondecoline-plz::icondecocenterup-plz::icondecoline-plz::icondecorightup-plz:

She was running through a dark, forest, the thick trees closing in around her as she bolted from who knew what. The sharp cracks of twigs behind her signaled that she was still being chased. The Princess skidded to a stop in front of a tall wall of mountain, unable to proceed any further. Looking wildly to her left and to her right, the undergrowth was so thick that she could not escape anywhere. She was trapped.

Panting as she caught her breath and leaned against the rock face, her head snapped up as the bushes in front around her rustled and shadowed figures came out. She could not see any of their faces, as they were hunched over, but she could guess who they were. Everyone she knew… why did they chase her? She breathed heavily as they stopped and surrounded her.

         “[Name…]” One figure murmured.

“What do you want?” she shouted, swallowing the bile rising in her throat as the speaker approached her, coming so close that she could feel their heartbeat, though she did not see their face.

“[Name] why would you run? Leaving your mother by herself…”

The light finally illuminated the shadowed figure’s face, revealing a dark, hard face that was her stepmother’s. Her body was formless, shadowy and in the vague outline of a dress.

“They killed me because of you, [Name]. I’m dead because of you.”

Twisting around to face another figure, she recognized the blurry shadow of her father. His face was empty, in a cold, sadistic looking frown as he stared bullets into her face. The frightening image of her father’s death crossed her line of sights.

“D-dad, I wouldn’t! I wouldn’t…” she stuttered, attempting to move further away from the advancing shadowed people. She bumped into the rocks, stumbling slightly as more of the figures closed in on her.

“[Name], love, I’m afraid it has to end this way,” the voice of Arthur hissed, sounding much more dark than usual.

“A lass with yer… freak abilities needs to be disposed of,” Allistor added, dropping his tone to a harsh accusation.

The eerie moonlight then bathed their faces in light. All her friends were there… her parents… Toris… why were they doing this? They came so close that she could no longer see the sky, standing over her menacingly. There was the glint of a dagger before they lunged at her. In a fit of near hysterics and curled against the rocks, she suddenly screamed and released something, something she could not explain. It took only a second for the whole clearing to illuminate in blinding light and for the shadows to disperse into nothing.

In the brief seconds of light, she saw a figure, a new one. It wasn’t anyone she knew, yet the figure looked familiar. It had only appeared for a moment, but she could distinguish the long hair of a woman and the billowing dress of a lady. The figure had opened their eyes, a glint of [eye color] before disappearing.

The light disappeared, and she was alone.

:icondecoleftup-plz::icondecoline-plz::icondecocenterup-plz::icondecoline-plz::icondecorightup-plz:

She woke up panting, her whole face in a cold sweat as she came to consciousness. It was just a nightmare… hopefully. That figure, why had it seemed so familiar, though she had not seen the face she had a strange pang of remembrance, but she came up with nothing.
Immediately, her head exploded into pain in one of the worst headaches she had ever experienced. It felt like her head was on fire. She dared not open her eyes, but tried to bring her hand to her forehead, an action that took a lot more effort than she thought. Her whole body screamed with exhaustion and the need to rest.

But why was she so fatigued? She couldn’t remember doing anything too extraneous. She did not even recall where exactly she was. Where was she?

The muffled voices of people in converse reached her ears.

“--can’t keep her here. She’ll kill us!”

“Nein. We don’t even know vhat she did, we should at least find out.”

“Ve~, why would we a-get rid of such a bella ragazza?”

“Oui, we can’t just leave her out ‘ere!”

“But did you see what she did to those soldiers? That could have been us!”

All the arguing that was going around her suddenly made her remember what had happened. That’s right. She wasn’t in the castle anymore. She’d escaped with the Princes. Her heart dropped when she remembered her father was dead. The battle with the Knights replayed itself in her mind, the images of the innocent townsfolk falling like bricks haunting her memory. The searing picture of her mother’s betrayal and the evil presence of the Dark Knight…

Her head spun, another wave of pain rippling through her head.

“Mmph…” she groaned. Immediately, the conversations stopped and though she had not yet opened her eyes, she could feel their stares on her. Her eyes fluttered open, gorgeous [eye color] orbs flashing in the early morning dawn. She was lying down in the grass in a small clearing, an extinguished fire not too far away. All of the Princes were staring at her though nobody said anything. Some of the gazes were sullen, others confused, and worst of all, some of them looked afraid. The atmosphere was much tenser than she remembered, but what had caused it?

“What… what happened? Why are you all looking at me like that?” she asked, her voice a bit groggy. She still felt like she couldn’t move anything, though color in her face had restored itself. Nobody answered her, most of them looking away and averting their gazes.

“Guys, what did I do? Please…”

Suddenly she was sent into an extreme cold chill, and it felt like her whole body had been encased in ice before the plunge disappeared, leaving the Princess chattering and freezing. She clenched her fists as she was still immobile, but laid there, panting as her strength felt drained again.

It looked like someone had finally made the move to help her, because next thing [Name] knew, Kiku and Yao were kneeling down by her head. Kiku used the back of his hand to touch her forehead, before pulling back quickly, holding his hand to his chest as if warming it.

         “[Name]-san, you are so cold.”

The girl weakly shifted her eyes to him before her body suddenly flared up. It felt like her temperature had risen a hundred degrees, like she was standing on fire. The sudden shift in temperature formed little beads of sweat on her forehead. Sensing a change, Kiku placed his hand back on her head only to withdraw quickly as he had the last time.

“Now you’re very warm. You’re having very extreme temperature changes, [Name]. I wourd think you had a fever, but that does not call for such wild change…”

Yao had not said anything, but it looked like he had realized something. Rummaging or something in the inside of his coat, he pulled out a tiny vial that was almost empty, save for a thin pool of liquid at the bottom.

“I have heard of this in China. We have a special remedy for it, and you should be glad that I have just enough left, aru,” Yao said, taking the vial and opening [Name]’s mouth, pouring the remnants of the medicine into her mouth. She swallowed all of it.

Instantaneously, the heat went away, leaving her trembling but not experiencing any of the drastic temperature change. Yao stood up, turning to the others while Kiku stayed crouched next to the Princess’s head.

“We’ll have to go to the nearest village for supplies, aru. We didn’t have time to take anything yesterday,” he suggested, to which many of the others nodded.

“Ja, that is a good idea. We should leave immediately,” Ludwig agreed. Near to him, Allistor pulled out a compass, looking down at it and then using a finger to try the wind.

“The nearest town is ten miles from ‘ere, on horseback it should take us thirty minutes, but with the lassie not in the best condition, it may take us forty-five,” he explained. The others nodded and moved towards their horses, taking their few things and saddling up.

“[Name]-san, can you walk?” Kiku asked.

The medicine had certainly restored some of her strength but she still felt rather weak. She sat herself up slowly, Kiku holding out an arm for her to use. Using him as support, she pushed herself to your feet, stumbling as he helped the Princess to her horse. She could feel her knees about to give out by the time he had assisted the [hair color]ette on top of here stallion. Shaking like a leaf in the wind, she clung to her horse as Ludwig gave the signal to move out, with [Name] towards the back as her horse galloped after the others.

The only thing left in the clearing was an empty fire and a glittering royal crown sitting in the grass.

:icondecoleftup-plz::icondecoline-plz::icondecocenterup-plz::icondecoline-plz::icondecorightup-plz:

Forty minutes later, the group rode into the town. It was quite a bit smaller than the village in Azaleá, but as the nearest settlement, it would have to do. It looked a lot like the Azaleán town with cute cottages and cobblestone streets, with people selling goods and fruit in stands along the road. It reminded the Princess a little of home.

“Stop here,” Ludwig commanded (he seemed to take on the leadership role quite well).

All nineteen horses slowed to a stop, whinnying and tossing their heads as their riders dismounted. It was still early in the morning so there were not so many people out, but the few that there were immediately noticed the rather regal newcomers. Upon recognizing the Princess and the Princes, they immediately bowed down. How they knew her, she did not know. Perhaps some of them had gone to the ball.

“Your highnesses,” one of the people said. [Name] looked at the people who had crouched down to honor their presence. She didn’t like to see them being praised by the villagers. They were all people, after all. She wanted to tell them that they did not need to go by such high names, but her throat was sore. Instead, Francis came to her horse and helped her down, holding her tightly as her feet touched the ground.

“We’re only passing through, sir. I trust that you have places here that we can get supplies, as well as a stable for the horses?” Arthur stated, to which the man nodded.

“Of course, Prince Arthur. I can take the horses for you, and you are welcome to do as you wish in the village. Whatever is ours is yours as well.”

Arthur nodded at him graciously and dismissed the people in the square to carry on with their day. Turning to the group, he made an oral list of things that they needed and ho was in charge of what.

“We’ll need to get new clothes. We’re too easily distinguishable in these bloody outfits and crowns. Someone will have to get those from the tailor. We’ll also need fresh water and—’’

“Ve~ can we a-get pasta too?” Feli’s enthusiastic voice piped up.

“Und beer!” Gilbert added, to which Matthias gave a hearty agreement.

“And tomatoes, ?” Antonio put in.

“If you get the jerk bastard some tomatoes then you’re getting me some,” Lovino grunted.

“Fine, fine now—’’ Arthur was interrupted again, this time by Francis.

         “Don’t forget ze wine, non?”

         “We don’t need wine but—’’

“Oh and maple syrup, eh?” Matthew suggested.

“You have to get some patties for grillin’, okay bro-ha!”

Arthur looked like he was about to lose it with all of the requests he was getting.

“Yes, yes, yes, now will all of you wankers shut up! You can get whatever and do whatever, I don’t care, just meet back here in three hours,” he groaned looking very exasperated by his companions. As everyone gathered their things for the day in town, the Princess approached Arthur. He hadn’t given her anything to do, and she wanted to help out.

“Arthur, what can I do? Surely there’s some way I can help out,” she inquired.

The Brit looked at her with a raised eyebrow, looking strangely hesitant.

“… Fine, but I’m not leaving you on your own, love. You can pair up with someone.”

She frowned in disappointment. Did he not trust her to do things by herself?

“I don’t need protecting,” [Name] stated.

“In your condition? I don’t think so. Besides, you never know what kind of men are in this town. They might take advantage of you.”

“Take advantage of me? I can handle myself, thanks. If I had a weapon then I’ll show you that I can fight just as well as you all can,” she argued, crossing her arms. It looked as if Arthur would have said differently, but gave in.

“You know what, fine. If you want to make yourself useful, get yourself a weapon and some new clothes. People are looking for you, there are people who want to kill you, so you’d better put on something less noticeable,” he stated.

“But you still have to go with someone and help them out with their task.”

You let out a sigh. There was the ‘but’.

“Alright, and who will that be?”

         “You can go with…”
